2025 Trade Deadline March 7 - Playoffs? Buy or Sell or Build?

OFFICIAL 2025 TDL THREAD

It's time to s*** or get off The Juck ******* Pott!

In my view, the team ought to focus on acquiring players for the future. Notable examples include Dylan Cozens, Bowen Byram, Zac Jones, Morgan Frost and Ryan Lindgren. This approach should be pursued regardless of whether they are contending or not. It is essential to acquire young talent who will contribute to the team for many years to come. While draft picks hold value, Detroit requires immediate impact players in the NHL, rather than enduring yet another cycle of three to five years spent on development. It is imperative to utilize those draft picks for trades.

*UPDATED*

notably not on the list is Elias Pettersson, who, on one podcast I watched, is basically 1B with Miller.

(just to keep this epic quote alive!)

If they are solidly in by deadline, I wouldn't mind a deal involving a expiring UFA Defenseman or top 6 forward. I kind of think it's a must at that point. We learned last season, one injury and it all comes crashing down. I still wouldn't mind a defenseman like Lindgren either. Could Boeser be an option at RW?

Right now Detroit sits in the last playoff spot. 17th from the bottom, just out of the lottery picture. If this trend continues, I am more than ok trading a #1 pick for a top 6 forward or D upgrade.

If they finish in the range of 17 to 20 and still retain the pick, the player I am particularly interested in is Ivan Ryabkin, a 17-year-old center from Russia who is currently competing in Muskegon. He is on track to achieve a points-per-game average in the USHL and has previously played for MHK Dynamo, where he accumulated 58 points in 44 games. Additionally, he served as captain of the under-17 World Junior team, recording 11 points in 6 games. Currently, he holds the 19th position on McKenzie's January rankings list.

I’m calling it now. We will more or less stand pat at the deadline (maybe some minor moves) and then sign Rantanen in the offseason.

Nah. Petry and Fischer are gone, Kane re-signs. Wallinder and Soderblom up next season.

Whats the max $ youd be comfortable signing him?

I don’t really know. With the cap set to go WAY up and all our good players locked in a low cost deals we could basically spend as much as we wanted so long as it didn’t hamstring us long term. I’d imagine he’ll be looking in the 12-13 million range. Steep price to pay but we could afford it and he’s an elite talent that would still be good for most of the deal. Him, Larkin, Ray, Mo, Simon, and Cossa/Augustine is a really good core group to contend with going forward.

tl;dr I think he’ll sign somewhere for 7 years x 12-13 million…

Last season, Florida paid a 2024 4th (which was converted to a 2026 3rd) and a 2025 3rd ( two 3rd's) for Tarasenko, if we offer to retain 50% salary, they should be ok with a 2026 2nd.

I see on the watch list that Detroit is connected to Cozens and Pettersson. No D? I am not sure we could afford the $11.6M Pettersson contract. They'd have to take some salary back.

If we were getting one of Pettersson or Cozens, who would you think would be the better choice for our team? Could Cozens get back to 70 points? Pettersson 100? They are both risks. Rumor has it that Detroit and Calgary are both in hot pursuit for Cozens. Maybe Pettersson is too expensive to acquire.

Detroit should definitely be perusing a Byram trade though. We need the upgrade on D. I'd still be good with a Lindgren trade as well. (or just try to sign him in July.)

I see that the Kraken have made Jared McCann available. He’s under contract for another year at 5 million. I’d be all over this if I was SY.

He has 2 more season's at $5M.

What's he worth? How about a package of him and Lukas Dragicevic? (since we dealt Andrew Gibson away)

Very underrated player. Gets ignored by the media because Seattle is a small market and he isnt a superstar that can carry the Kraken. But he's quietly very good. Get.

He’d be a nice upgrade for Tarasenko on the 2nd line.

McCann's cost.   BearGrin, 1st and 3rd?   I mean the guy puts up numbers and his aav is 5m for the next two seasons as well.

will Kasper be pissed off that he got sent down to GR?   Saves some cap space on paper, but still, he would be losing some dough wouldn't he?

Kasper hasn’t really been sent down. It’s just a paper transaction. They happen behind the scenes all season long.

So he's not losing any money?

If he's officially sent down "on paper" then no, he is back to AHL wages.

EDIT: And he's not really losing money per say. He'll still going to be paid NHL wages for the time spent on the Detroit roster. Even if he spends the rest of the year in GR from here on out he will have gotten roughly 570K out of the max potential 886K he could have earned this yeae. Pretty good.. and pretty sure he'll end up a lot closer than that once he's back up.
