They're all performing exceptionally well in a pro league more analogous to the NHL style. Particularly when it comes to defending. On raw talent alone I'd argue he's first or second but it's not unheard of for European players to have a hard time translating to the smaller ice. Look at Kasper (who had an exceptional D+1 season in the SHL as well). With Berggren and Edvinsson those concerns are gone. I presume they will be with ASP as well, but I until he proves it you have to assume all those guys are one step closer to the reaching their ceilings and I'll always err on the side of guys that have proven it. kipwinger 8,671 Report post Posted January 4 (edited) Goal and an assist for ASP today. I cannot believe we got this kid at 17OA. What a steal. Edit: Solid showing for 4th round pick Kevin Bicker today as well. Goal and an assist for him in a win for Germany. Edited January 4 by kipwinger

And he's seemingly turned this program around in 1-2 years, after years of regarded coaches. What's the secret? Red Wings affiliation?

My buddy who scouts for the Isles played with the Nightingale brothers at Lake Superior State, and I was planning on asking him this summer when I see him what the fuqq is going with MSU hockey, because Adam is doing a seriously good job. Howard is looking realy good btw, damn the Bolts for getting good players late.

Sure the very top guys will go to Michigan, but there's no reason why the 2nd tier guys shouldn't be going to Michigan State. Nightingale has a pipeline now, everyone at the program knows him and as long as he makes Michigan State respectable in the short term he'll start getting top flight recruits. Is USNDP and College becoming the more popular route? Seems like a lot of good players are steering this way more and more.

Kinda, but that's misleading a bit. The USNTDP is basically an all star team that start playing together when they're like 14 or 15. So basically if you make that team you're going to have a zillion points, you're going to have tons of international success, you're going to go to the best college programs, and you're definitely getting drafted high. If they took all the best kids in Canada, made a super team out of them, and then let them obliterate CHL teams all season prepping for the major international tourneys those guys would all likely have a lot of NHL success too. But not because the "route" was better, but rather that all those guys were going to be successful anyway.

kipwinger 8,671 Report post Posted January 6 Speaking of which, Cossa vs. Wallstedt head to head tonight in the Griffins game. 0-0 in the first. Wallstedt has been getting peppered and has stood tall. Cossa hasn’t had as much to do but did have to face a powerplay.

The Wild are one of the better teams in the AHL and GR just stomped them. Cossa looked really solid. He's now beaten Askarov and Wallstedt in head to head matchups in the last month. Those guys (and Spencer Knight) were the top goalie picks in the last five years and it's good to see Cossa playing as well as his high-end peers.

kipwinger 8,671 Report post Posted January 7 So as I've mentioned, I watch a lot of Griffins games. One thing that sticks out about AHL broadcasts is just how DUMB career AHL players sound during their interviews. I really think that explains those guys that dominate in the AHL but suck in the NHL. I think they're just way too dumb to play NHL systems correctly.
