funny sidenote, Over the summer, I did a "franchise Mode" of NHL 20 and this kid was one of the draft picks we selected. Not that I knew who he was or anything. I don't think he ever made the big club, and eventually I traded him.  Ok, back to REAL draft convos!

Did you even read the write up on Perfetti? Apparently Askarov has been linked to Detroit. I think all of these reports need to be taken with a pound of salt though. Yzerman isn't going to let anything leak unless he wants something leaked. And what purpose does it serve the organization to let everyone know what player he's going to select before the draft? None.

No one knew anything about Seider being a potential target until the hours leading up last year's draft. I'm sure you hated the Seider pick as well. What do you think of it today?

Truth is, most of us here know very little about any of these prospects, compared to the pros. I have players I am hoping for, but I'm not going to get too bent out of shape, regardless who we pick.

You know the answer to that lol

I dont believe everything i read , just my own personal belief is askarov is in the mix 100% and i think hakan andersson would be bigtime pushing raymond/holtz although i think raymond more after that who knows

I like seider , still not sure id have taken him over podkolzin , i dont know if seider has the offensive production needed for a top d pair but i like him , yzerman had no choice but to fix hollands mess . We been avoiding fixing our d issue for years which is why i pushed for a dman in previous drafts and yzerman wasted no time with seider/tuomisto/johansson in 3 of his 4 first picks so i cant fault him

Well might as well not do any research on prospects, sit back and enjoy the picks we take as being the right one and hope for the best

I'd take any of the forwards or defensemen over Askarov. F*** taking a goaltender in the top 5.

I've heard some people say that maybe we should have taken Cozens or Zegras over Seider, but Podkolzin? Nah...

Point is, a lot of people were pissed about the Seider pick. Fast forward a year, and most people think it was a fantastic pick. Not because Seider improved his game drastically in one season, but because most people, aside from Yzerman and a few other scouts, didn't know enough about him leading up to the draft.

I really didn't think it was possible for someone to misconstrue things as badly and as often as you do... Where did I say that you shouldn't research prospects? Or that you should just assume that whoever Yzerman picks is the right pick?

All I'm saying is, IF Yzerman takes Perfetti, we all know you'll be pissed, but there's a strong possibility that you could be dead wrong on your "research", and Perfetti could end up being the home run pick, 2nd best player taken from this draft.

You say f*** taking a goalie but i can totally see us taking him , wouldnt shock me at all . Look how good everyone is and sre getting in the east and our division ? Were going to need an elite goalie to compete .... for me its raymond by far #1 l askarov 2 with of course top 3 being who everyone thinks will be

Was a big fan of him at the draft and his play and still am , think he’ll be force come the playoffs but whatever like i said im not mad , how can i be? Holland f***ed us up badly and yzerman quickly had to try to fix our defense with top end prospects ... i like seider and he’ll be a big minutes eater dont know if he’ll be that big top d pairing guy thatll get the 50+ pts ... hope im wrong , but its a good pick, one we needed and need

Could i be wrong ? 100% , i wouldnt bet any money on him being better than raymond thats for f***en sure ... we have a 4th overall pick if we take perffetti and hes a 50ish guy and a 2c then that pick would be a disaster , we cant afford to f*** up a pick so high . If your more sure askarov has a higher potential of being an elite #1 you do it and as much as id hate it same with drysdale/sanderson for d pairing

i think raymond has all the tools to be an elite #1 line guy and we’d be f***en stupid to pass on him

I can too. I just personally wouldn't take a goaltender that high, ever. I don't care how good he's projected to be. It's not how I would build a team.

I can see Seider being more of a shut-down guy, but I also think he will contribute enough offensively to be considered a legit top pair defenseman. The question for me is, will he be an elite number one.

Obviously if Perfetti ends up being a 50 point 2C, it was a bad pick, but also obviously if Yzerman takes him at 4th overall, he's pretty confident he will be a better player than that.

I get that we all have opinions.  Yeah,

Mine are based on the eye test only.   I would vastly prefer Rossi over Perfetti because  he beats opponents one on one better than Perfetti, and  handles the 'in traffic' game better.   His defensive game appears superior as well.   I'm hoping either Stutzle or Byfield drop, but, if they don't... Rossi please.

I hate the idea of taking a goalie 4th overall.  Lucas Raymond..... meh.

I would love it if Khusnutdinov is there at #32.

Holland did a good job drafting recently. Larkin and Mantha were both steals and any other GM would have taken Zadina at 6. The jury is still out on how good of a pick Rasmussen turns out to be. Any "mess" left by Holland was due to contract extensions and free agent signings. The team was already in rebuild mode when Yzerman came in, and he isn't really doing anything differently now than Holland would have.

He signed guys he shouldnt have and we been stuck with them for what feels like forever . Our defense had been horrendous since lidsteom left and he ignored it for years at the draft besides the cholowski year and i dont think its a coincidence yzerman came here and straight away drafted 3 dmen out of our 4 first picks ... now you can say they were “the best player on our list” but i think that would be way too convienent

Except they were. Larkin, Mantha, and Rasmussen were literally the top player left on their draft board when it was Holland's turn to pick. Like I said, you cant complain at all about the first 2 (great picks relative to their draft position), and Moose may yet turn into a beast. Zadina was an outlier, as everyone know Holland was going to take Hughes until Zadina fell into his lap.

If Holland had focused on D with his first pick those years, none of those guys would be on the team and you'd be complaining about our forwards.

Rasmussen was not the top player left on the board at 9 in his draft. I'd say he was firmly behind at least a couple others at the time, and probably even more in hindsight.

Everything we've all heard and read is that Bouchard would have been Holland's pick, if Zadina hadn't fallen, not Hughes.

Rasmussen was the top player left on the Wings' board. If he wasnt, they wouldnt have taken him.

I misread, but yeah, no s***... All of those players were obviously the top player's on the Wings' board, but only two of them were definitively the right selection. Well I guess, even for Larkin, there was Pastrnak...

When the 2016-2017 season ended we had on the back end playing for the wings an aging kronwall, dekeyser, green, ericsson, renouf, lashoff, smith, marchenko, sproul, ouellet, jensen, russo,no top end d prospects in the pipeline .... yet we draft rasmussen? When guys like brannstrom, foote, valimaki went right after ... please save the best on the list crap

thats just a line teams use , theres no doubt we took rasmussen cause we liked his size ... you think its just a coincidence 3 out of the first 4 picks the wings selected last season happened to fall to a defenseman? Teams have a list but when the time comes theyll also look at their pipeline to factor into their decisions ... also depends where you pick , if your #1 you wont pass on a mcdavid but when your 9th other factors might come into play

No one was askin for holland to take a dman every single draft but the last time we took a dman with our first pick before cholowski was 2007 , twice in 12 years with lidstrom/rafalski retiring  and no plan to make a deal or draft a future franchise dman ... thus yzerman not wasting any time last draft and if he can make a move for a young dman now with upside he wont hesitate

The only defensemen most people would have considered at 9th overall, was Foote. Brannstrom and Valimaki weren't even in the conversation for most, and I'd still bet on Rasmussen being better than all three.

I really wanted Vilardi, and now after finally getting healthy, he looks like he might be the better player. In hindsight, Necas would have probably been the right pick there.

It's not crap. It's reality. Most teams that draft well, do not draft by position. They have a list and they stick to hit, regardless of "need". Because need next season could be completely different in 2-3 seasons when that player is finally ready to make the jump.

So, it's okay to look at your pipeline and realize you're weak at defense, and take a defenseman, but it's not okay to look at your pipeline and realize you're lacking size, and take a monster center 9th overall?

And yes, I do think it's a coincidence that 3 out of those 4 first picks last year were defensemen. I think Yzerman truly believed Seider was the best pick at 4th overall. Same goes for Tuomisto at 35, and Johansson at 60.
