ChristopherReevesLegs 7,022 Report post Posted February 28, 2018 When Mike Green - a player who's probably a top 4 offensive specialist - is your #1 Dman, eating almost 20 minutes a night, your team has a real problem. Even Lidstrom was like 17 to 18 minutes a night in his prime.
lomekian 201 Report post Posted February 28, 2018 Like most, if he wants to come back 2-3 years, $4-5m cap hit, and his neck is ok, I think it's a no brainer. Even if we want to tank, having a D who can effectively give possession to the kids up front is still well worth it, unless we want to go fulll EDM, BUF or ARI. It also means Hronek can come up as a second RHD offensive D without the same amount of pressure, while learning his role from the only person on our roster with a comparative skill set. Also provides a talented partner option for Cholowski, which would be really limited otherwise. And allows us to keep Ericsson and Daley together who seen to work as a pair and boost each other's potential trade value. this isn't like re-singing Helm. This would be keeping the best player in our weakest position. and unless he drops off a cliff, we can always trade him in 2 years. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

I voted yes, and I think its likely he's re-signed. He wants to be here, he just started a family, he didn't seem all that enthusiastic about being traded to a contender. I believe the reason he wasn't traded is because the return wasn't good enough. I think there were teams interested, I would be shocked if someone wasn't willing to throw at least a lower draft pick out there for him, despite his injury. I think it was more of Holland not wanting to sour his relationship with Green by accepting a lowball offer for him. The only reason he would do that is if he is interested in bringing Green back. I also think that if Holland got anything from Green that he wasn't serious about re-signing, he would have traded him for the best offer, even if it was lower. (Like Mrazek). Seems like both of them are on the same page. That said, I am thinking a 3 year/15 million dollar deal. 6.0 year 1, 5.0 year 2, 4.0 year 3. Makes it a 5 mil cap hit. Thanks for the welcome LOL I will certainly not try to be a retread.
amato 3,210 Report post Posted February 28, 2018 I don’t think we should worry about spots for rookies if we re-sign Green. If two rookies really show they’re ready for full playing time after training camp/pre-season, waive Witkowski & Jensen and scratch whoever the weakest link is at that point in time. Or, if only one is ready for full playing time, just waive Witkowski and scratch whoever else. I think Oulette will be waived at some point when we can’t find a trade for him, leaving us with (in no particular order): Green, Daley, Dekeyer, Kronwall, Ericsson, Jensen, Witkowski. With that group, opening up a spot or two shouldn’t be a problem.
marcaractac 3,963 Report post Posted February 28, 2018 Green being re-signed should not block the likes of Hronek and Hicketts. There are plenty of blueliners on this team who could and should be axed to free up roster spots. 3 krsmith17, amato and kliq reacted to this

So, if he's eating "almost 20 min a night", he'd be below the average. The top guys used to log 30+ min a night, but I think that's come down a bit over the years as the speed of the game has increased. 2 krsmith17 and LadyRedWing reacted to this

Do you think Malkin is a number 2 center just because he's slotted behind Crosby? Do you think there were 4 defensemen on that Caps team better than Green? Not even close. He was their 2nd (3rd at worst) best defenseman. He's better than Niskanen (in my opinion) and way better than Alzner, Orpik and Schmidt. Green finished that season on the "3rd pair" with 45 points, 2nd behind Carlson. He's a top 62 defenseman in the league, which makes him a top 2. Like I said, he's a top 3 defenseman on any team, top 2 on most, and number one on ours. Why would we let him walk? Are there better players available in free agency? I doubt it. Are there better players knocking on the door from Grand Rapids? No. 1 kliq reacted to this

With Washington though, his last year there, he was 5th in ice time for Dmen, but only seconds per game behind Alzner. Difference in ice time between #1 and #5 wasn't that significant. Less even strength and SH time is offset with more PP time. 3 minutes ago, chaps80 said: Trade him and Mantha and a 1st for Burns. That makes zero sense for the Wings. But as this is as likley as us winning our division this season, I agree. Green is our best defenseman by far, of course we should resign him. I just hope Kenny has learned from his past mistakes and doesn't hand out a long contract. I really thought with Green out and the increased minutes and responsibility Jensen would thrive and maybe prove something. He hasn't. He's a 3rd pair guy. Same with XO. No issue with either of them really but they are exactly what they are. Kronwall needs to hang em up and my verdict is still up in the air on Ericsson.
