LeftWinger 5,065 Report post Posted November 12, 2014 (edited) Hell, why enter the draft when you can further your education (hockey doesn't last forever) and then just choose where you'd like to play? Not saying that players should just start doing this, but the guys who feel their education is more important than the NHL have the right idea. Then they also can stay an amateur and develop more, ie. Danny D. and possibly win that NCAA title in the process. It's a fine line to cross risking a payday when you could very well injure yourself and be done before you step foot in pro sports. PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1,935 Report post Posted November 12, 2014 2003 was the year Yzerman played a handful of games. In 2002, Yzerman got hurt around the Olympics. I thought Datsyuk was already on the roster by that point, but I could be wrong. You're right - I forgot Datsyuk's first season was 2001-02 not 2002-03. Dekeyser wasn't drafted because he was a late bloomer. Datsyuk made the team in 02 because he played so well in camp they didn't want to risk him going back to Russia permanently. 1 joshy207 reacted to this
joshy207 156 Report post Posted November 13, 2014 So just for the hell of it, I ranked current Wings players based on where they were drafted in their respective draft years. Obviously, many of these players were drafted by other teams. Actually, only these three were drafted by other teams... Weiss - 4th overall (Florida, 2001) Cleary - 13th overall (Chicago, 1997) Miller - 186th overall (Anaheim, 2003) 1 krsmith17 reacted to this
joshy207 156 Report post Posted November 13, 2014 IIRC, yes. I was actually going to comment on this. Him being listed as undrafted is a bit misleading. He picked the Wings over many teams pursuing him. Nothing misleading about it, DeKeyser was not drafted by an NHL team. He, and a lot of other NCAA players, are late bloomers. In most cases, they aren't the kids who are ready to play major junior at 16 or 17. Major junior is usually a faster track to the pros... you're out of eligibility at 20, which would be the age of a college player in the middle of his career. Some players benefit more from the CHL, others benefit more from the NCAA. It's up to each player, his family, and his advisors to decide which route is better for that player. 2 haroldsnepsts and krsmith17 reacted to this

I wonder how many other teams have only three players on the roster that weren't drafted by them? I'm guessing none.

kliq 3,763 Report post Posted November 13, 2014 Weiss - 4th overall I dont see why this is suprising. Weiss was a very good player in juniors, and that skill set did carry over into the NHL. Injuries in your early 30's shouldn't dismiss what you accomplished in your 20's. 1 55fan reacted to this
GMRwings1983 8,801 Report post Posted November 13, 2014 AND CLEARY 13TH!!!!! Didn't Cleary score 50 goals in juniors? Ironically, the guy picked right ahead of him was Marian Hossa.
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted November 13, 2014 There probably isn't another team that has fewer players on their roster drafted by other teams....not that I've checked. The better bet though would be that there is likely no other team that currently has as many undrafted players on the roster.....the Wings currently have

If our main roster had 9 undrafted players, then that would be something.

The current 23 man roster only includes Monster, Glendenning, DeKeyser, and Lashoff (and almost Ericsson)

toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted November 14, 2014 Yeah, it's only the 4...I'm not sure where I messed up there....my number was meant to be only guys that have played for the team this year (doesn't mean they are still on the 23 man roster, but it certainly wouldn't be considering the full 50). I'm guessing none. This number is a lot lower than last year... Alfredsson, Bertuzzi, Samuelsson, Tootoo, Eaves/Legwand, all drafted by other teams, all gone this year.
