RedWang 422 Report post Posted November 22, 2013 Yes, this is to avoid anymore reprimand for our endless stream of whining, dissing, complaining, and flat out bitching about none other than Daniel Cleary. This is your place to kick off your shoes, sit back, and take a few pot shots at the NHL's least valuable player. So stay a while, let the anger flow freely, becuase this is our special place to rip the man apart. 1 T.Low reacted to this
themcityblues 249 Report post Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) It was sad to see Dan's smiling face and twinkly eyes when he interviewed and told the cameras that he "loved Detroit so much" and "couldn't play anywhere else" all while this fan community here despises him worse than... worse than... well, Quincey! If only Dan could speak those words knowing what this thread will become. Edited November 22, 2013 by themcityblues

If Quincey get's resigned, then they'll be on the same playing field. I don't have a problem with Cleary as a person, why wouldn't he love the Wings? Look how they treat him. The guy plays top minutes and he doesn't have to do a single thing except continue to "skate" around like a bar leaguer on his 2nd six pack of the night. 1 themcityblues reacted to this
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted November 22, 2013 Love Dano, always will us Newfs stand together. But it's some sad to see where he is today as a player compared to a couple years ago. He just can't skate or keep his balance well enough anymore to warrant decent ice time. Still a decent penalty killer, thinks the game well, but the body is broken down. He should be on the 4th line rotation, and nothing more. I hope Babs gets him away from Datsyuk. 4 Motown4013, GoWings1905, puckloo39 and 1 other reacted to this

Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted November 22, 2013 Dan Cleary is 2nd on my list of disposable players. At least he occasionally provides a net-front presence. But if by some miracle Sammy is moved/dropped, Cleary is next in my sights to clear up some room for the kids. He floats, is injury prone, and worst of all is a drain on the cap. I could handle the first 2 at $1mil per year, but this is a little sad. Still a better option than Sammy though, what has he done this season? I would trade them both for minor leaguers and bring Tootoo/Eaves up in a minute. 1 red and white forever reacted to this
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) Love the guy and appreciate everything he has done for the Red Wings, but it's really beyond time for Cleary to be off the team. Guts and veteran leadership don't compensate for being completely useless on the ice, which has sadly become Cleary's fate. Bottom line really, if you can't skate in this league, you don't have much of a place on any roster. When Alfie and Weiss return, hopefully that will signal the end of Cleary and Samuelsson playing regularly or at all. Neither has a role anymore and the Red Wings forward group actually looks real strong with Nyquist up and healthy bodies. Having Cleary on a line with Pav is even more infuriating. Imagine the outrage over that last night if Gus hadn't thankfully stolen the show. dobbles 252 Report post Posted November 22, 2013 this has been touched on before.... but the unfortunate side effect of this situation is that a lot of hate for hollan and babcock gets displaced onto cleary. i don't blame clear for wanting to come back to detroit. nor do i blame him for skating on whatever line he is told to be on. what angers me is that our gm would sign cleary knowing the roster problems it would create. the sad thing is that cleary isn't the worst contract up there as sammy is millions times worse. the issue is exacerbated by babcock. instead of playing cleary like the 4th liner he is getting paid to be, he gets put out there in quality minutes with top tier linemates. so i blame our gm for a bad signing and i blame our coach for misusing players. unfortunately, the player is the one that takes the blame publicly. 3 roboturner, Detroit \# 1 Fan and The Greek reacted to this

Red Crazy 201 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 I don't think its Dan Cleary him self that I hate, its the way Babcock always finds a way to keep him in the line up even when he is awful. Bert, Pavel, Tatar is a great line. Bert Pavel, Cleary is not. If Babcock can't see that then maybe he is the problem. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 There is not a player on this roster who wants to drag the team down and who doesn't want the best for the Wings (and to win!!) - that includes Cleary. I like Cleary, always have - he has such a heart for the game. But I do wonder if he knows he's not contributing like he used to be able to. It's really not his fault that he keeps getting put out there on the ice -- but how does he recuse himself from playing and trying to do what is expected of him, even if he can't quite cut it now? Just taking the devil's advocate position. Do you suppose he knows he should probably be packing his bags? 1 Wingzman91 reacted to this
13dangledangle 968 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 I will start by saying I do not hate Cleary. However being reprimanded for stating obvious flaws in our system is silly. At times "the hate" seems a lot like a broken record but that's only because Holland and Co let it spin so long before changing it, thus annoying the mass who annoys the remaining, until then the poor unannoyed folks, essentially ruining it for everyone...For that I am sorry

Before you all grind my scrotum to dust remember, I'm just trying to be nice to the guy. That isn't enough. He really could have adopted a couple other specific roles...like a face-off specialist (I'm thinking of Drapes in his final years) or a Holmstrom tip-in role...or both. He seems completely unaware that he isn't the same player as he was three years ago.

He seems completely unaware that he isn't the same player as he was three years ago. I think he's fully aware that he sucks. That's why he bailed on the Flyers and went running back to Mike & Ken. And I don't know how many times this season FS-D has shown a shot of him on the ice, making his way back to the bench at a snail's pace, with a stone-cold look on his face that says, "I suck. Thank God Ken and Mike are sappy suckers. WAIT, NO, DON'T SMILE, DANO. You've gotta look like the coach has been ripping you apart and your job is on the line. Gotta look serious." I know I've made these points before, but this is the Cleary thread, so there.

Nev 1,085 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 I don't hate Cleary. I do hate ungrateful, spiteful, keyboard warriors who are unable to appreciate the fact that the reason Cleary is so ineffective is because he has given quite literally everything his body has for this team. I refuse to hate a player who has been a part of so many great moments for this team. I refuse to hate a player who continued to play in the 2009 playoffs - all the way to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals - with a double groin tear so bad he couldn't actually walk up a flight of stairs. I refuse to hate the player who laid out Phaneuf, fought Pronger, scored the winner in game 7 against the ducks. I refuse to hate a player who took a slapshot to face and was eating through a straw for a month, who lost 20lbs of muscle that had taken a lifetime to build, and when he came back went straight to the front of the net again. So all you internet tough guys who don't have a fraction of the heart, courage and toughness that Dan Cleary has displayed in the Red + White, I suggest you all STFU and show a bit of class, dignity and gratitude. 8 Detroit \# 1 Fan, GoWings1905, barabbas16 and 5 others reacted to this

Guest Playmaker Report post Posted November 23, 2013 Never been a Cleary fan, even when he was actually playing well, but I think the Cleary hate has gotten totally out hand. Even if he's waived, this team still has plenty of issues. We will still have Samuelsson and Bertuzzi, we will still lack depth on D and an offensive defenseman, and we will still have plenty of other guys who are underachieving this year (Weiss, Andersson, Miller, Abdelkader, Howard to name a few). Nyquist will definitely help the lack of offense, but adding him and subtracting Cleary isn't going to solve every problem the Wings have.
Dabura 12,230 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 Cleary has three points after 22 games, as bad a stretch he’s gone through since joining the Wings in 2005. His one goal dates back six weeks. “It’s not enough,” coach Mike Babcock said. “The bottom line though, is confidence is a tough thing in the league. We’re hoping ideally that playing him with Pav might help him. Pav is a pretty good player. We need Pav to be going big-time for us to have success, and helping him is probably more important in someways that helping Cleary, but that’s our thought process right now.” Taken from Malik. St. James is the author. So all you internet tough guys who don't have a fraction of the heart, courage and toughness that Dan Cleary has displayed in the Red + White, I suggest you all STFU and show a bit of class, dignity and gratitude.
