stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 Insurance signing - He will be the starter in GR, unless something unexpected happens where neither Osgood or Conklin fill the roll, it's a good backup plan... he gets his money, with his one way contract to play in GR and the Wings can call him up and feel confident that he is at least competent if needed. Good deal for both sides Would have to think it's a 2-way deal. Money was a big factor to him, I can guarantee it's a one way deal, but he will still play in GR - the one way deal just assures him NHL money... im thinking backup, lil joey didnt wanna go to gr... Correction, he didn't want to make AHL money - he's trying to secure his financial security for his family and I don't blame the guy, I don't think it was ever a pride thing for him, as much as wanting the guaranteed money... 1 Finnish Wing reacted to this
Travis 576 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 The Griffins just posted a 'Congratulations' to Joey on their Facebook. Hopefully it's not a sign that he's moved into the back-up role. 1 evilmrt reacted to this

Didn't Kenny say a couple weeks ago that Joey wouldn't be offered a contract? I'm kinda wondering if they've decided to go with Osgood and know they need a good #3 when Ozzie can't play or maybe they want to bring Larsson over and give him some competition for the backup spot? It just seems a little strange to give a #3 goalie NHL money if you're still planning on getting a proven, and healthy, backup.

Doubt Ken Holland has talked to him yet.
HockeytownRules19 902 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) From Ted Kulfan's twitter: "RT @tkulfan: Joey MacDonald returns to the Wings. Signs a 2-year contract. He'll likely be the No. 3 goalie in the system." If that is so, i'm fine with it... Even if he is signed to be the #2, I will always trust Kenny on his decisions Edited July 11, 2011 by HockeytownRules19

Yeah I think you're right, but it still makes me wonder. If the plan was to talk to Ozzie then go sign Conklin, what's the point of the MacDonald deal 3 weeks after Kenny said he wouldn't be offering him a contract? Weezer 2 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 Joey Mac is back weoo. Seems like a good guy and had a decent run going this year at one point so I cannot complain. Plus he's a good ol' Nova Scotian boy.

If the plan was to talk to Ozzie then go sign Conklin, what's the point of the MacDonald deal 3 weeks after Kenny said he wouldn't be offering him a contract? MacDonald didn't want a 2-way contract where he was earning crap money for playing for Grand Rapids. As others have speculated, I'm guessing he's 3rd string with a bigger $ contract. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 Who here has noticed the fact that despite Joey's play last year, he didn't get the backup job he was looking for? This means he came back to Detroit willing to accept the same role if necessary, hoping for more if possible. Likely also means Ozzie is the choice, because it means he'll be in Grand Rapids and one of Pearce of McCollum (probably McCollum) will be in Toledo. 1 Majsheppard reacted to this
stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 This signing makes me think Kenny might actually be leaning towards Osgood, which is why he signed the insurance policy, which I am VERY hesitant of coming off of such a serious injury for a goalie and at his age as well... I love Ozzie and wanted him to go out on his own terms, but I don't think he's a better option than some of the guys still available... groin injuries are no joke, especially for goalies, ESPECIALLY for goalies who are 38... Before Osgood, I would rather, in this order, see our backup be: Conklin Larsson Leclaire 2 Hockeymom1960 and LidsFan reacted to this
WizardOfOz30 1,886 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 This signing makes me very optimistic that they'll go with Ozzie for one more season. It may be a risk but with risks sometimes come good things which is what I'm hoping will happen for him and the Wings.

If they do indeed go this route (which I am starting to think KH is leaning towards), I will pull for Ozzie and won't lament the move, it just scares me a little... but like I said, I would be very happy if he went out with a bang... xtrememachine1 795 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 I REALLY hope that he's back as a 3rd string goalie and not as the backup. I do not feel confident with him taking over if something happens to Howard. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

I do not feel confident with him taking over if something happens to Howard. Long haul, playoffs and all, there's no one in our system, or on the horizon that I feel confident taking over for Howard and that includes Osgood (as I still question his health) I still really think we may be letting one slip through the cracks by not giving Larsson a better chance, he pushed Howard for the starting gig in GR and absolutely shut it down in the SEL last year... why not give him a serious look in camp/preseason as the backup? If he doesn't work, roll with Joey Mac, or hell, even offer Osgood a contract then, I don't think he'll be signing anywhere else...

Didn't Larsson say he didn't want to play for the Wings or something? Like there was some sort of falling out or maybe he had an attitude problem. I was pretty high on him too until I read that or something to that effect on this board.
