55fan 5,133 Report post Posted December 23, 2010 Those were my heavy drug years. Didn't get clean until '87. Had I known that somewhere in NS Sid the Kid was being born, I might not have sobered up. In all honesty, that was before I had internet and cable tv. Following the team was next to impossible. I just knew from some of dad's friends who still had family in Detroit that things weren't going well, but that we had some new kid that was going to save the day. Being a Lions fan, I didn't believe it. For all of you who sat through the games, cheered on the team, and believed that someday they would rise again, I salute you. Gerard Gallant (still love him) was great at that time. We also had Adam Oats, Peter Klima, Bobby Probert and Joey Kocer so the win/loss record was awful but it was also fun to watch some great smash-mouth hockey!!!!!!!!!! Guest screwdahawks Report post Posted December 23, 2010 I also remember "darkness with Harkness" and fans wearing paper bags over their heads cuz the on-ice product was SOooooooooooooo bad. Watching games at the old Olympia was great. The players used to walk right down the concourse after the games to leave and I still kick myself for not having the courage to approach Mickey Redmond for his autograph. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted December 23, 2010 I had started following the Wings a season or two before. Those were the days of the Snore-is (Norris) division. Just about everyone made the playoffs, and the Wings still managed not to. Kinda painful because they lost so many games, but they did have a lot of fun players to watch. Yzerman, Gallant, Probert, Kocur, Oates, O'Connell, Burr, and of course, Harold Snepsts. The upside was my buddy's dad used to get free tickets through work all the time and we could move our way up to great seats no problem. It felt like I went to almost every home game those few seasons. We got to know the equipment manager (Dominic Mara, I think??) so he'd look for us when giving away broken sticks and pucks and whatnot. Overall I have fond memories of the Dead Things era. The next season when the Wings made the playoffs and came back from 3 games to 1 to take the 7 game series against bitter rival Toronto, it felt practically like they won the Cup. Those of us who followed them back then - winning the Cup of 1996/1997 season was oh so sweet! yep! that is why whenever a thread pops up asking our opionion on which Cup was the best, 1997 is ALWAYS us old-timer's answer! I actually had tears in my eyes when Stevie raised that Cup. I was at work and didn't want to leave until the final credits rolled! God Bless Hockeytown, we have certainly been blessed with this team! I was 10, and my Uncle was a Red Wings FREAK with a pair of season tickets, and his wife stopped going so he asked if I wanted to go with him on days I wasn't in school. Of course I went.
