something that would never happen in Detroit

As a life long hockey fan and native of Raleigh North Carolina, I've always been rather jaded at my fellow North Carolinians apparent lack of intrest in the only professional team in the area that's ever won a championship.

Now the hurricanes themselves have a very loyal following but it's a very intense, very minor portion of the general population of North Carolina.

To the point. I'm standing outside the RBC center waiting for a Michale Buble concernt (A. it's for my wife, B. the man put on a hell of a show) and low and behold out steps the entire prospects camp for the canes, they didn't use a hidden door or anything, they just walked past about a thousand people waiting in line.

The only person in the whole place that knew who they were was me, who smiled and said "see you soon" to first round pick jeff skinner and the youngest of the staal brothers as they passed me.

Only in carolina.

I wouldn't think Michael Buble fans in carolina would be very into hockey. You must be the rare exception :)

Taint me, But my wife is. That said after seeing him play he made me a fan. He put on like a ten min. comedy act in which he made fun of the RBC faithful at length. He's a huge canucks fan from what i've been told.

Guest Hatethedrake!

I'm not sure most people in Carolina know that they have an NHL team. They may not even know what the NHL is. Maybe they think the NHL stands for the Nascar Hick League.

I was waiting for someone to post that.

To a degree you're correct. That's why I hate that they're called the "carolina" hurricanes, most if not all of north carolina could give a spit about the canes. Now the city of Raleigh is a differnt story, there are some very die hard fans in the city, which makes sense. It'd be like if the preds went by the tenn. predators instead of the nashville preds, no one in tenn. cares about the preds except the people of nashville. To wit, i've been to a game and misguided as they are, they love there team.

I thought his music was for old boring people but I guess that happens when you get married :P

and yes he is a huge canucks fan and was part of the opening ceremonies at the olympics.

can't say I didn't mind it. My personal musical taste range from Cash and Elvis to Nas and Jay Z. Good music is Good music I guess. He got made fun of himself that Carolina won a cup before the nucks did.

It's just the way it is in a lot of places that's not in the North or not in a typically colder climate.

That's not to say hockey doesn't belong countrywide. Of course there will be spots that aren't as popular as Michigan, Minnesota, New England, whatever...there are pockets here and there where there is decent establishment. Example...I live about 75 minutes away from Biloxi (Southern Mississippi area) and they've had minor league hockey franchises year in and year out since the mid-90s I believe.

However, it's not going to be the main dish for plenty of people where we are from. That's not bad, it's not stupid, it's just the way it is. You like hockey a lot, I like hockey a lot, it can be just left at that and all's good still.

Honestly, I don't think many people in Detroit at the Joe for a concert wouldn't know our top prospects if they were to see them. The problem with drafting in hockey in general is that it will be 3+ years before you see 99% of these guys in the NHL, if at all. Football is different. NCAA football is BIG in the US and once a player is drafted they are usually roster players right away.

edit: They wouldn't know...

To be perfectly honest, I know the names of the people we drafted. I even watched some of the interviews online with our prospects like Sheahan. If I were to see them on the streets I wouldn't be able to tell you, and I was looking at their pictures minutes ago. I would only be able to pick out the regular Wings. I mean it takes alot of exposure for me to remember someone by their faces enough for me to see them and assume I know them.

I couldn't pick out Suh either... but him being effing huge would help!
