WMUCarGuy 8 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) A buddy of mine in Minnesota was compaining to me today about how he couldn't understand how a bunch of "dinosaurs" could be so dominant every year (the classic mindset that the Wings are SO old, and yada yada ya...) so I decided to do a little math. With the lineup we had on the ice tonite the wings average age is just 29.45! In comparison, the Penguins with all their "young superstars" are just 1 year younger at 28.45, so clearly the Wings are a much more youthful team than the rest of the country would be led to believe. Then I figured our 4 injured regulars in and our average age went up to 30.20, but still that's really not old at all, especially in comparison to some years past. I feel like the Wings will get even younger next year and still be a supremely talented (and youthful) team! Edited June 1, 2009 by WMUCarGuy
EuroTwin 240 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 We could have a team full of 21 year olds, but as long as Cheli is a Wing, we will be "old."

Broken 16 381 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 So THATS why they keep Cheli around. To trick other teams into thinking we are old. GENIUS!
WMUCarGuy 8 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) chelios is the reason they are considered old Yea, aside from him, we don't even have a single player over 40, Lids just turned 39 and Draper 38 though. Hell, of our normal 20 man roster, only 6 players are over 35, so I mean yea, Cheli figures in, but rarely plays. If you look at our regularly skating roster, we're MUCH younger than the rest of the country would like to believe. Edited June 1, 2009 by WMUCarGuy
Zetterling 16 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) They're not old. That is an old 90's myth that has stuck with the team. Look at Abdelgader, look at Helmer. The team is not old yo. Edited June 1, 2009 by Zetterling
WMUCarGuy 8 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 Next year, with some luck, we'll have some combination of Helm, Leino, Abdelkader, Ericsson, and Howard up on the A squad full time, so we could get considerably younger next year!

I feel like the Wings will get even younger next year and still be a supremely talented (and youthful) team! Ironic, that our "Old team" had 2 guys freshly called up from Grand Rapids.....score tonight. 3 Goals of six, by guys less than a few days into the league. Game winner of the Chicago series, how old is Helm? The "old" statement was developed when guys like Hull and Chelios were still primary players. It just hasn't disapeared, even though Detroit is more than 70% developed out of it's very own farm league now. Perhaps by "old" he means.......... Leino, Fillpula, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Abel-however you spell it-Helm, Erricson, Kronwall, Stuart. Yep, pretty old team For the old guys we play Lidstrom, Draper, Rafalski, Sammy, Cleary, Osgood, and some of them aren't even that old. If having half your team in their twenties, and half veteran cup winners is a bad thing........well then we shouldn't be two wins from another cup, now should we? So far "Youth" in Pittsburgh has led to a 2-0 deficit two years in a row, and they even ADDED old guys with cups, to try to compensate Edited June 1, 2009 by truebladearmy

edicius 3,269 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 would someone tell my pens that you cant dump and chase against the wings. especially if you leave out the CHASE part. Believe me, I know how infuriating that can be. I've complained many a time about the Wings' "dump-and-don't-chase" game in the past. Now that we actually seem to have some speed on the roster, we're able to successfully do the chase part, so I don't have as much to complain about.

Reggiedunlop you reflect a good image on your fellow fan base, much like Duckguy I hope you stay around here after the series. Crosby will wake up, especially at home! For once, a solid post. I do agree that Pens are dump and chasing a hell a lot, and not getting to it after the dump. Not a great style against detroit, who likes to pick and pass. And Crosby has been well covered. As I s*** talked to all the Pens fans where I'm at, he's never had the type of coverage he'll have in Detroit. Detroit has been, and is currently, a defense first team. Not many teams can afford to set their star forwards to pure defense when a top guy is on the ice, but Detroit has had that luxury. I would by no means imply that Crosby isn't amazing. Just that, he usually has a lot more room to work.
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted June 2, 2009 (edited) Loved it in Game 2 when the players who scored were 25, 25 and 22. Future is very bright indeed. Edited June 2, 2009 by Aussie_Wing

Ppl always try to bring the wings down and haven't they realized by now that we just take it in one year and out the other? You can't bring us off our game. Great example of a "young team" not knowing how to compete in the playoffs...game 3 round 1 against Col. Kron hits someone I forgot who but then they come back and go after cleary behind the net and leave Hank wide open. Cleary makes a pass to Hank while getting hit and the crowed cheers for the hit...and what does Hank do? Hit them where it hurts and scores...your to worried about this or that...but we'll just keep playing our game day in and day out. GO WINGS!!!
