In a live interview on Swedish television and reports that are now all over the Swedish print media, Forsberg said, "I felt almost immediately that this wasn't going to work. The foot still hurts too much, and it is the same reoccurring problem."

Asked if he thinks he'll be able to play competitive hockey this year, he said, " I don't think so. It’s not looking bright for the future."

Good, now we certainly won't get him.

f*** Forsberg.

Classy!! I have never been a Forsberg fan but this is a tough break and probably the end of his career. Helluva hockey player and one of the most intense and clutch playoff performers I have ever seen. I could have cared less if we got him on the Wing's or not. For the right price he would have worked but it look's like that is all water under the bridge now.

I can't belive some of you people :(

Why not? He played for the divealanche didn't he? There's no reason for why we shouldn't dislike that piece of garbage. Besides, if we're going to sign someone, I want more than a 50/50 chance that that player might actually play all of the games.

For a player this good to be stopped before his time is a tragedy. I had honestly hoped to see Forsberg bounce back and play a few more solid years, eventually retiring on his own terms. It's sad for a champion to go out like this.

I would say that there are very few hockey players that deserve to be called "piece of garbage". I my estimation Forsberg is not one of them. He just happen to play for the team most of Detroit fans hated with passion.

Thank you. I just don't understand the pure hatred of a few towards Forsberg. I understand not liking him cause he was an Av, but a few of you seem to hate him as a person. He was a great player and fun to watch. I don't have any Red wing players that I "hate" I dislike many, but that comes from how hard they play against us and the success they have against us. Holmstrom was probably one of my least favorite cause how hard he plays in front of the net, but is he the kind of player I love to see on playing in my town? hell yes, cause of the way he plays (if I could swallow the fact that he played for the Wings :) ) Like I said its just a few that seem to "hate" him, most of you dislike him, but respect what he has given to the game of Hockey.

His foot must still be hurting. He's done.

I think I missed two or three steps between those two lines of logic (and I use the term logic liberally in the case of your second line :P ).

Hopefully Forsberg gets better. He's too full of talent and drive to be lost to the hockey world like this. :( I may hate the Avs of '96-'02 mint, but all he did was play clutch hockey. Sorry guys- but I'm sure Aves fans hate Wings players too. I mean it's not like he's Pronger. At least he isn't a gigantic dirtbag that intentionally injures other players then ******* about the mild suspension he gets for it.

I actually feel bad for him. I'm by no means a Forsberg fan, but when a great talent like that can't leave the game on his own terms, it just ain't right.

I agree with you, Edi. I have never liked Forsberg, in much the way I never liked Waahhh... But like him or not, I hate to see a player whose body forces him to give up the game before his heart and soul have come to terms with the situation. I feel the same way about Jiri Fischer -- except that I was crazy about Jiri, and still am.

Hope Petey stays home in Sweden and follows in his daddy's coaching footsteps. I imagine MODO would love to have Forsberg hanging around, in any capacity.

The chances of him ever signing with the Wings was slim and none, so it's nice to not have to worry about playing against him.

Does this mean the 2-year saga of constantly hearing about him will end finally?

As far as this situation is concerned, it's great he won't be playing for the Wings now. I would have hated for Holland to invest 4.5 - 5 million in a broken down old shell of a once great hockey player.

I still have a certain disliking for Forsberg, but it's too bad he went out in such a way. A great hockey player like him should leave on his own terms, not because he has to.

Good luck Peter.

This is sad.. another big name hockey icon is going to be leaving the game.

You can imagine what the people of Finland are going through.

We've always had so much love for him here.
