well that was straight to the point. lol. going into a red wings message board and saying that the Captain is only a number 10 on the list is not a smart move.

I was merely being objective. I love Stevie as much as anybody, but I can't honestly say that he was 3rd or 4th. Besides, there are some idiots out there who have him ranked somewhere around 20 or so. I think that they work for ESPN. I have Gretzky, Orr, Howe, Lemieux, Richard, Hull, and Messier ranked ahead of him.

Retrospectively looking at my list above, I have him 8th, but still not in the top 4.

I dont care if this sounds bias. But if we're going by numbers then hands down no one can touch Gretzky. But as in an all around player I put Mr. Steve Yzerman number 1 on my list. Wayne's scoring ability is second to none. But what Yzerman could do defensively was unmatched. Super Mario is also up there with Stevie. But Yzerman could do anything. Scoring goals, perfect passing, a God at faceoffs, extremely defensively sound, and arguably the greatest leader in sports history. Not to mention a Conn Smythe winner and a 3 time Stanley Cup Champion. If there was a fantasy draft and I could pick any player all-time, Yzerman would be my number 1 pick.

Poetically put.

Hull and Richard were two of the most feared offensive players in history, even more so than Messier and Yzerman, even though the numbers would show differently. I think Hull scored something like 600 goals before he left the NHL to play in the WHA while he was still in his prime. Otherwise he might have more goals than anyone in history. Both he and Richard revolutionized the game in many ways.

If you want to talk about respective eras, Richard is the cream of the crop. The era he played in wasn't meant for 100 point seasons, so on paper in comparison to the greats, he doesn't look great. However, you have to take in consideration, the era he played in. The Habs wouldn't have won as many cups without him. He was the best player of his time, and the toughest too.

1. Gordie Howe

2. Maurice Richard

3. Bobby Orr

4. Steve Yzerman

5. Wayne Gretzky

WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?!

I completely agree with you. As an overall player and face of a team Yzerman has to be ranked number 1.

Im not tryin to be a jerk, becuase i completely agree with you on yzerman's qualities, but unless you can calculate defensive ability and leadership, Wayne Greztky would go first in a fantasy draft. However, if i were starting a team and i could pick anyone in the history of the NHL to build around, i would most definately pick Yzerman.

How can you have Paul Coffey ranked in the top 10 all time. I have him ranked around 9th or 10th on the greatest defenseman list.

Yeah, Paul Coffey was just a forward playing the point. He didn't even have any defensive awareness.

I think a lot of people are jumping on people who are just trying to be objective. For me, the top ten skaters are this.

#1 Wayne Gretzky

#2 Bobby Orr

#3 Gordie Howe

#4 Mario Lemieux

#5 Marcel Dionne

#6 Maurice Richard

#7 Mark Messier

#8 Steve Yzerman

#9 Mike Bossy

#10 Ray Bourque

I would pick Gretzky, Orr, and Howe before I would even think about drafting Yzerman.

Yzerman is my favorite player of all time however I don't rank him #1 of all time. Because as said by some one else you cannot calculate leadership and defensive abilities into stats.

Gretzky

Orr

Howe

Lemieux

Hull, Bobby not Brett

Richard

Yzerman

Esposito

Dionne

Bourque

Let me tell you in my mind the rankings I think aren't up for grabs are Grets and Orr, everyone else I think an argument can be made for sliding them up or down a couple of spots they were all that good.

8th all time in goals

7th all time assists

6th all time in points

3 Stanley Cups

Olympic gold medal

Lester B. Pearson

Conn Smythe

Selke

Masterton

Arguably the best captain to play the game, easily one of the top two.

Yzerman was one of the greats, but honestly I still couldn't see placing him anywhere above #5.

Messier is the best captain in nhl history. Yzerman is 2nd best.
