    Faceoff Rules

In addition to the wingers not entering the faceoff circles before the puck is dropped, the players feet must be in the hash marks and the tip of the sticks must be in the little white areas in the faceoff dots. The visitor must also put their stick down first.

    Western Conference Semifinal MVP?

I'm surprised Zata hasn't even got a mention, he put up 10pts and saved our asses on the 5 on 3 yet again last night.

    Western Conference Semifinal MVP?

Ozzy - The games were so tight that without him staying awake and making the big saves when he did, the balance would definitely have swayed. The Ducks didnt get a ton of shots in the series, but they sure did get a lot of high quality chances out of the ones they did.

    Darren Helm//Merged

Drapes only scored more than 15 goals once, so it not like the bar for offensive comparison is set very high. His real value was always defense. Ask Stevie Y - it can be taught. Helm has a lot of upside.

Why do you like the Red Wings?

My parents got me skating at 4 yrs old in 1979 at Canfield in Dearborn Heights. They took my brother and I to games at the Joe to get us excited about playing. [i dont think I went the Olympia before the Joe opened, but I honestly dont remember that far back]

    Gary Bettman

"Gary Bettman was hired to do two things," Jimmy Devellano, senior VP and alternate governor of the Detroit Red Wings, said yesterday. "One, to grow the game in the U.S. Two, to get a hard (players') salary cap. Nothing more. Nothing less. He's delivered on both counts." http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/05/tw...tmans_deci.html

Onsides and Offsides Rule - Control or No Control

what does look to have been changed more recently is that you only have make skate contact blue line to clear the zone. correct me if i am wrong, but i think it used to be all the way out.

I saw that play with Z and Getzlaf behind the net too, and my heart sank a little bit. That having been said though, they really dont skate past the puck carrier half the time. In fact, I thought they were doing a pretty good job in the offensive zone getting pressure on the puck and sealing off the boards. It isnt always about punishment, its about forcing the offensive team to hasten their decisions with the puck. I dont think the Wings are deluding themselves into thinking they are going to knock anybody through the boards. Where they really find themselves at a physical disadvantage is defending the cycle in down by their own goal line. Being towards the top of the league in takeaways is all well and good, but when Perry, Getzlaf or Ryan is allowed to just play with the puck along the boards until somebody cuts to the net then a body needs to be put on them. Big Rig is doing very well, but sometimes I think they are just too complacent with "forcing them to the perimeter".

I didn't love the showing either, but I guarantee if Downey was squared up with Beauchemin and it was a hard throwing minute and a half fight it would have pumped the Ducks and their crowd up twice as much.

well maybe it wouldnt take them off their gameplan as much as it would detract from their ability to intimidate, and their perceived advantage from it both on the bench and in the stands.

I think it would because on the ice Beauchemin > Kopecky , in the box Beauchemin = Kopecky

I think it benefits the Ducks more to be able to tell Franzen to "get up" or to smack Pasha around or to stick a couple guys in the head and know there is nothing they are going to do about it. When someone like Kopy answers the bell it detracts from their intimidation gameplan.

not if he is beating up on a weakling. if that was a couple of feared heavyweights going at it it would. i think in fact it had the opposite effect. it is more energizing and confidence building for them to simply bully the Wings and humiliate them when they don't fight.

    Kronwall Jumps on Hits

didn't anyone else have the coach who told them "it's not a penalty if they don't call it" or "if you ain't cheatin you ain't tryin"? clearly every single infraction isn't going to be called, so it is the job of the professionals who officiate the game to determine what is allowable, and it is the job of the players to exploit what is allowable to their best advantage - legal or not. i think its this whole hiding behind the rules stuff that makes people think the Wings are soft. legal checks are nice, but well timed crosschecks, BC two-handers, slough foots, or heel whacks are still valuable tools provided the refs dont call them.

    Anaheim Preview

i don't know if i completely buy the whole "hot goalie" excuse for playoff disappointments. the Red Wings have made stars out of goalies by throwing 40 shots on net all from the perimeter. considering the way the Wings took it to the BJs Im not as concerned as in years past about their ability to get down low, get rebounds and create distraction. there will definitely be a price to pay, but the last thing the Ducks will want to do is take 8 penalties a game. I have more concerns in the Wings end of the ice and handling their big bodies in front of the net.

    Nick Lidstrom a Norris Finalist

He also has the best first pass in the game, can slow down/control the breakout with patience like few or no others, and what I think is the most overlooked part of his game is his vision and ability to pass off the boards or make soft dumps where his teammates can reach the puck and the opponent can't. These are also all qualities which have, under his quarterbacking, allowed the Wings to employ a successful style of puck control play that other teams are just not skilled enough to do.
